(Columbia, SC) -A Berkeley County man has been selected to run the SC Forestry Commission's statewide law enforcement effort. Senior Investigator Mike Maggard of Cross was promoted to the agency’s top police post in April.
The 22-year Forestry Commission veteran will oversee the law enforcement work of more than 30 sworn officers across the state. As chief, he will personally supervise an elite three-agent team handling complex timber fraud and arson investigations.
Maggard began his forestry career as Ranger for Berkeley and upper Charleston Counties, managing the Commission’s firefighting and law enforcement efforts there for 16 years. In 1998, he was promoted to Region Investigator, serving 13 coastal plain counties.
Maggard’s experience includes hundreds of woods arson cases, and he is recognized as one of the south’s foremost timber fraud investigators.
