Established by Congress as part of the National Archives in 1934, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission is a 15-member body that "…promotes the preservation and use of America's documentary heritage essential to understanding our democracy, history, and culture."
NHPRC makes grants nationwide to help identify, preserve, and provide public access to records, photographs, and other materials that document American history. The grants go to state and local archives, colleges and universities, libraries, historical societies, and other nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S.
The SC SHRAB is also authorized in federal regulations governing the NHPRC. SC SHRAB is the body through which South Carolinians participate in this federal program. SC SHRAB conducts these ongoing NHPRC grant activities:
- Reviews records proposals of state and local significance before NHPRC makes its funding recommendations.
- Provide consultation and advice to potential NHPRC grant applicants.
- Monitors the operation and progress of NHPRC-funded grant projects in South Carolina
Potential applicants for NHPRC funding are encouraged to contact the SC SHRAB Chairman/Coordinator in the early stages of preparing their grant proposal drafting, for advice and assistance in developing a competitive proposal for the NHPRC's national-level review process.
