What
“Preserving the American Historical Record Act” means for South Carolina:
* South Carolina could annually receive nearly $700,000 if a total of
$50 million dollars appropriated nationally;
* Competitive grants to would be available to over 100 local archives,
historical societies, public libraries, colleges and universities, and
historical organizations and over 300 local governments;
* If we had this program, you might see:
- Researchers using a South Carolina online digital collection of historic
photographs, documents, and maps;
- Teachers and students using an online educational site of archival
records with lessons that support the South Carolina Department of
Education’s learning standards;
- Family historians searching name indexes online for military service,
land ownership, naturalization, and the state census for all of South
Carolina;
- The public attending exhibits and programs in libraries, museums --or
even in Interstate highway stops, shopping malls, and community centers;
- Researchers using e-mail and databases that have been saved in a way
that they can always be read;
- Government officials using a disaster plan for their archives and
records to save essential records after a flood.
