The Archives Institute is a basic archival education workshop sponsored by
the South Carolina State Historical Records Advisory Board (SC
SHRAB). This three day workshop, which is funded by the National Historical
Publications and Records Committee (NHPRC)
will introduce basic archival practices and standards or Archives 101 skills.
The Institute will provide training materials and instruction designed to
introduce individuals who have responsibility for archival collections—but may
have never received formal training or might need a refresher course—to the
basics of archives. Using lecture and hands-on activities, this course
will delve into archival aspects such as policies and procedures, preservation,
and disaster planning and recovery.
Participating in this course will not make you an archivist, but will make you
aware of the responsibilities and obligations that archives and historical
records programs tackle and arm you with knowledge, information and a network of
colleagues to call on to take back and utilize in your own organizations and
collections.
The Archives Institute will be free to SC archivists, records managers,
students, volunteers from organizations that house historically valuable
manuscripts and archival records (churches, local historical societies, museums,
universities, etc.). The SC SHRAB is also providing money for travel support for
participants living outside Columbia. Since this workshop is being offered with
no costs, participation is limited and will be competitive. Be sure to fill out
your application and submit it by the August 14, 2009
deadline.
