BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE: S.C. Statute 1873(15)439 requires that when
a homicide has been committed and the person committing the homicide has either
not been arrested or has escaped from custody, the county coroner must report to
the governor within three days of the inquest or escape. Upon receipt of such
report, the governor is authorized to offer a reward not to exceed five hundred
dollars. S.C. Statutes 1876(16)106 and 1884(18)763 authorize the governor to
issue proclamations offering rewards of fifty to five hundred dollars for the
apprehension of unknown criminals at large or fugitives from justice.
SUMMARY SCOPE NOTE: This series contains correspondence, proclamations of
reward, and wanted posters. Information includes the nature, circumstances, and
location of the crime (mostly murders); the name, age, race, and physical
description of the wanted person; the name and race of the victim; the amount of
the reward; and occasionally, the name of the person claiming the reward.
