New World War One Living History Impression

This Spring, the Education Department’s new World War One uniformed “living history” impression will become available for guided tours and presentations. Curator of Education Joe Long will portray a United States Navy petty officer on recruiting duty, circa 1917, in order to present some of our World War One exhibit themes in an interactive fashion.

The impression will help highlight some of the “forgotten stories” which are also covered in the exhibit, including the Navy’s overall contribution to the war effort, but also the historic decision to recruit women into the Navy as enlisted Yeoman, and the obscure service of Allied airships on convoy-escort duty. In each case, the focus will be on the service of South Carolinians in these roles.

The 1917 petty officer represents the third uniformed impression offered through the CRR’s education department, joining the Confederate infantry soldier and the Spanish-American War cavalry officer on the department’s muster role.
