McRae Papers Information Now Online

The SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum’s recently acquired McRae Papers Collection are now featured on the museum’s website.  “Discovering a Collection: The Colin J. McRae Papers” offers a sneak peek at the amazing collection of over 2500 documents, of which approximately 1000 documents relate directly to the Civil War.

This exciting collection belonged to Colin J. McRae, the Confederacy’s chief financial agent in Europe during the second half of the Civil War. The documents, primarily invoices used for Confederate purchases, were used to investigate Caleb Huse, a previous purchasing agent, for corruption. The information contained in these documents sheds new light on the little understood importance of English imports to the Confederate war effort.

Visit http://www.crr.sc.gov/support/mcrae/ to learn about the discovery of the papers, their conservation, research opportunities, and future exhibits.  The website also offers a sneak preview of the documents, paired with the British merchandise that is reflected in the invoice.

The McRae Papers Collection will officially unveiled to the public on June 14, as part of a Civil War history event at the museum.  More information will be added soon to the museum website.
