THE SOUTH CAROLINA FORESTRY COMMISSION ASSUMES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OF PROPERTY OR FOR ANY ACCIDENT THAT OCCURS WHILE YOU ARE USING SAND HILLS STATE FOREST.


General Rules

  1. NO SWIMMING ALLOWED ON THE FOREST.
  2. Sand Hills State Forest is a Wildlife Management Area (WMA) and all WMA rules and regulations apply. WMA rules and regulations are available at the Forest Headquarters, Monday-Friday.
  3. Tree felling is not allowed. Only wood already on the ground may be collected and burned as fire wood.
  4. All fires must be secured in designated fire sites. Fires must not be left unattended and must be fully extinguished before departure from fire site.
  5. Unlicensed vehicles are not permitted on any roads.
  6. Steps must be used when climbing Sugarloaf or Horseshoe Mountain.
  7. Bikes or cars with loud mufflers are not allowed on the Forest.
  8. State fishing license required for fishing.
  9. Electric trolling motors allowed in all ponds.
  10. 10 HP motors allowed in Sexton Pond.

No Off Road Vehicles are allowed on Sand Hills property at this time.


Camping Rules

  1. Campers must obtain a reservation from Forest Headquarters.
  2. Campers must camp in the reserved site.
  3. Lanterns must not be hung in trees or bushes.
  4. The person obtaining a reservation is responsible for everything that happens in the reserved site.
  5. Reservations will run from 11:00 AM on day one until 11:00 AM the following day.

Horse Groups

  1. Horses must stay on existing roads and designated horse trails.
  2. Horses must not be hitched to trees. Use hitch post, tether lines, or hitch to the trailer.
  3. Horses must stay on the road when using the Mountain Road except when getting water at the outflow of the spillway.
  4. The Mountain Pond may be used for watering horses near Area 8.
  5. Parking for Horse Trailers for day riders is provided on Gas Line Road in the Sugarloaf Mountain Area.
  6. Current negative coggins is required.

Wheeled Vehicles (Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles,etc.)

  1. Licensed vehicles are not allowed on any road that is blocked by a gate, dirt, or sign.
  2. Licensed vehicle use is limited to the road system that is maintained by the State Forest.
  3. A permit is required to use roads marked "Authorized Vehicles Only".

Trail Use Permit

  1. A permit is required for trail activity on Sand Hills.
  2. Permits are not required for hikers using the trails.
  3. Permits may be obtained from the Sand Hills State Forest Headquarters weekdays or at Cheraw State Park on weekends.
  4. For your convenience permits may be obtained by mail by submitting an application and the proper fee or permits may be purchased by credit card by calling Sand Hills Headquarters during office hours.
  5. Permits are good for one year from date of purchase and are valid ONLY on the State Forest where purchased.
  6. Sand Hills State Forest operates a NO REFUND policy.

No Off Road Vehicles are allowed on Sand Hills property at this time.
