FIRE SEASON '08
South Carolina’s primary wildfire season begins in late December and continues through early spring. Fires ignite more readily and burn more rapidly now due to dry weather, swift, gusty winds and flammable vegetation.
This year’s fire season started early and promises to be especially severe due to record drought conditions statewide. In November, 313 fires burned 1, 156 acres – three times more wildfires than last year and more during the month of November than we’ve seen since 2001, which was also a drought year.

The SC Forestry Commission fights wildfire with bulldozers equipped with plow and/or blade. A firebreak, plowed down to mineral soil, separates oncoming fire from available fuel.
