Harbison School Programs

Enjoy an outdoor educational experience by visiting Harbison State Forest. This 2177 acre forest, operated by the SC Forestry Commission, is being developed as a "teaching forest" and has a wide variety of lesson plans used to meet your curriculum needs. Each year thousands of students from the Columbia and surrounding area participated in educational programs conducted at Harbison. Students walked the trails learning about forest ecology, tree identification, food chains and multiple-use forest practices. Harbison State Forest is located just nine miles from downtown Columbia on Broad River Road. Easy access from I-26 or I-20 makes this an ideal location for a field trip. For information about the educational programs available at Harbison State Forest and a free information booklet, call (803) 896-8890.

Take Your class to Harbison! Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Brownies are able to earn forestry badges through programs conducted by Harbison staff. Some scout leaders expand these outings by reserving one of the group campsites and including an overnight stay as part of their outing at Harbison.

Principals and teachers may also want to arrange a Project Learning Tree educational workshop as an in-service day for their schools. Project Learning Tree is an award-winning environmental education program designed for teachers and other educators who work with students from pre-kindergarten through high school. PLT activities, which are hands-on, action-oriented, and interdisciplinary, are designed to supplement existing curricula. Educators who attend a six-hour workshop receive the 402 page, preK through 8 PLT Activity Guide free of charge. With over 100 activities, these guides are an excellent supplement to your normal classroom materials. Three hour secondary workshops and modules are also available on topics dealing with forestry issues, forest ecology, solid waste, and environmental risk.
