(Columbia, SC) - An Anderson teacher has been selected one of the nation’s outstanding educators by a top environmental education organization. Dr. Larry M. Kowalski of Midway Elementary has been named one the country’s top five educators by Project Learning Tree (PLT).

Kowalski, an Anderson District 5 elementary school science specialist, was recognized for outstanding teaching as well as service beyond the classroom. He was nominated by South Carolina PLT Coordinator Jerry Shrum of the SC Forestry Commission.

Shrum praised Kowalski’s focus on helping students develop critical thinking skills. “He teaches students how to think, not what to think,” said Shrum. That philosopy is central to the Project Learning Tree education concept, he said.

Kowalski, a former Teacher of the Year, is now eligible to participate in a number of expense-paid tours and conferences sponsored by Project Learning Tree.
