LONGS RESIDENT CHARGED IN HORRY CO. WILDFIRE

(Columbia, SC) --Law Enforcement agents with the South Carolina Forestry Commission have charged a Longs, SC resident with allowing an outdoor burn to escape.  The resulting fire led to a 240-acre7wildfire on Sunday, February 10 which destroyed several homes and five vehicles in Conway, SC.

On Saturday, Feb. 9, SCFC officials, along with Horry Co. firefighters, responded to a call along Hwy 701 at Ole Kings Street.   Steve Matern, 31, was ticketed for allowing an illegal debris burn to escape.  Maximum fine for this charge is $465.00.  Matern’s court date is March 20 at 9 am in Judge Mayer’s court in Conway.

Investigators determined that Sunday’s dry, windy weather rekindled the burn area resulting in the damage or complete destruction of more than a dozen mobile homes and five vehicles.
