FORESTRY COMMISSION SENDS MORE FIREFIGHTERS TO TEXAS

( Columbia, SC) -- Texas is bracing for another wildfire blow-up this weekend, and more SC Forestry Commission firefighters are getting ready to head west. Six men and three bulldozers will leave Columbia tomorrow morning en route to Lufkin, Texas.

Five SC Forestry Commission firefighters are already working on fires in central Texas. They were dispatched on January 1.

The wildfire situation in Texas remains critical. Firefighters responded to 64 new fires yesterday. Conditions are expected to worsen over the weekend as a dry cold front passes through the state.

In addition to the South Carolina contingent, forest firefighters from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin are also assisting the Texas Forest Service.
