Who We Are
Elder Services is an outpatient program of the Santee-Wateree Community
Mental Health Center. It is located in the Sumter CAF building and has provided
services to older adults for many years. It was established to provide
specialized care for older members in our community.
Why Elder Services
Why do older adults need specialized mental health
treatment? Is it simply because they are older? No. The reasons older adults seek help are, in many cases, no different
than younger adults. However, as we age, the risk of losing family and friends,
experiencing significant loss of health, physical limitations, as well as changes in job and social
roles increase dramatically. So while we know these are not caused by age
itself, it is a contributing factor and provides challenges in how we treat
these individuals.
Poor physical health increases the risk of mental
health problems. What many people do not realize is that mental health problems
can contribute to poor health.
When mental health problems and physical problems occur
at the same time, it takes special care to identify and treat both. Symptoms of
depression or confusion can be signs of a physical illness. Also, how we react
to emotional problems can affect our thinking and how we care for ourselves.
Just because you are physically ill does not mean you can’t enjoy life. And just
because you have emotional problems does not mean your physical health has to
suffer.
Elder Services
Our staff is trained in and sensitive to the needs of
our older citizens. Our staff psychiatrist oversees all client services. We work
closely with each person’s personal physician and other community and support
agencies to ensure the highest quality of care. We work with the "whole person",
not just a piece of the puzzle. Some of the services we provide include:
Problem assessment, to include full psychological and cognitive assessment,
Psychiatric assessment for treatment planning, medication intervention &
management, and medical referral as needed, Individual, family & group
counseling, Medication monitoring by nurses and Case management, to assist the
client in accessing both mental health and appropriate health and social
services. |
