Two New Members Appointed to Mental Health Commission

Columbia, S.C., June 1, 1999 ... Jean Burns Popowski of Columbia, S. C., and Louise R. Ravenel of Charleston, S.C., have been appointed to serve as members of the S.C. Mental Health Commission.
Popowski, a native of Columbia, received her bachelor's degree from the College of Charleston in 1974 and her Juris Doctor degree from USC School of Law in 1977.
Prior to her appointment on the S.C. Mental Health Commission, she was a municipal court judge for the City of Columbia Municipal Court.
Ravenel attended the College of Charleston and was the executive director of Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities, Inc., from 1977 until 1994. She is a strong advocate for children's mental health services.
Prior to her appointment, she chaired the Children, Adolescents and Their Families Committee of the State Mental Health Association.
The S.C. Mental Health Commission is the governing body of the S.C. Department of Mental Health, and has jurisdiction over the state's 17 mental health centers and six psychiatric facilities. Its seven members are appointed for five-year terms by the governor with the advice and consent of the Senate.
