Pee Dee Mental Health Center Names Director
Columbia, SC -- Today the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH) and the board of the Pee Dee Mental Health Center, Florence, SC, named Philip Bowman, M.D., Ph.D., executive director for the center. He began his career at the center in 1994 as medical director and has been serving as interim executive director since January 2006.
Dr. Bowman received his bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT; his master’s degree and his doctorate in clinical psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA; and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA. Further, he completed his medical internship and psychiatry residency at Letterman Army Medical Center, The Presidio, San Francisco, CA. He has received numerous awards and honors and is a published author.
Thornell Kirven, Pee Dee Mental Health Center board chair, said, “The board members are confident that Dr. Bowman is an excellent choice to lead our mental health center. We are excited about his vision for the center and his commitment to our clients and their families. He is also dedicated to serving our community and will spearhead our efforts to establish a much-needed crisis center.”
The South Carolina Department of Mental Health is an integrated system of care designed to meet the behavioral health needs of adults, children, and adolescents. It operates seventeen community mental health centers, Harris Psychiatric Hospital, Anderson, SC, the Columbia Behavioral Healthcare System, and three nursing homes, including two for veterans.
