Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center Names New Executive Director

Columbia, SC – Officials at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH) and the board of the Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center announced today that John C. Young has been named executive director of the mental health center. Mr. Young has worked for the SCDMH for over 22 years, the last 16 years as director of the mental health center’s Barnwell office.

According to State Mental Health Director George P. Gintoli, “John brings a great deal of experience and has worked with the Barnwell community to strengthen services to individuals suffering from mental illnesses. I am confident he will build similar alliances with the Aiken and North Augusta communities and strengthen the continuum of care for individuals and their families whose lives have been impacted by a mental illness.”

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Mr. Young has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in social work. He is a licensed independent social worker and a certified group leader in the Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program.

In addition to his professional counseling work, Mr. Young has many years of service to his community. He was a member of Barnwell School District # 45 board of trustees for 15 years and is a member of the Barnwell Lions Club.

Said Mental Health Center Board Chair Dr. Mary Ann Rogers, “John Young has great plans for the Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center, and the board is very pleased with his selection. Mr. Young is a compassionate professional, is committed to helping people with mental illness recover, and is a very capable administrator.”
