The Art of Recovery - Department of Mental Health Showcases Artwork by People Who Have Mental Illnesses
Columbia, SC, April 27, 2001 - To help celebrate May Is Mental Health Month, the SC Department of Mental Health (DMH) will display artwork by members of SC SHARE, South Carolina's only statewide organization comprised of people who have mental illnesses.
The public is invited to view this artwork on the second and third floors of the DMH Administration Building, 2414 Bull Street, beginning Tuesday, May 1.
The Art of Recovery Project encourages people with mental illnesses to express themselves creatively and provides an avenue through which their works can be seen, recognized and enjoyed.
The project will periodically rotate the pieces on exhibit throughout the year in order to showcase artwork by people who have mental illnesses in DMH community mental health centers and inpatient facilities.
The South Carolina Department of Mental Health has served the mental health needs of South Carolina citizens since 1821. Its 6,000 employees and 9,500 volunteers offer services from 17 community mental health centers and seven inpatient hospitals statewide.
