Columbia, S.C., April 27, 1999... The South Carolina Department of Mental Health's (SCDMH) program, Division for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People, has been selected as a semifinalist in the 1999 Innovations in American Government Awards Program.  This award was extended by the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.

SCDMH is one of 100 semifinalists and, as a result, qualifies for further selection leading to the national program award.  Basic criteria leading to the award include program achievement, outcomes and the delivery of quality services to persons within SCDMH's system.

This award directly recognizes staff members in the Deaf Services and Hard of Hearing Division who maintain a sense of deep commitment and responsibility for service delivery.

The South Carolina Department of Mental Health has served the mental health needs of South Carolina citizens since 1821.  Its 6,000 employees and 8,000 volunteers offer services from 17 community mental health centers and six inpatient hospitals statewide.
