Hughes named Director of Bryan Psychiatric Hospital

Columbia, S.C., April 23, 1999... W. Russell Hughes, Ph.D., has been named director of the G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital.  Bryan Hospital is a 277-bed, short-term intensive care facility of the S.C. Department of Mental Health (DMH).

Hughes, who is the nursing home administrator at C.M. Tucker, Jr./Dowdy Gardner Nursing Care Center; will assume this position immediately.

Hughes earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina; a master of arts and a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology form the University of Alabama; and a bachelor of arts degree from Wofford College, Spartanburg.

Two of Hughes' prior positions include director of the Division of Communications and Governmental Relations for DMH and director of Coastal Empire Mental Health Center in Beaufort.

The South Carolina Department of Mental Health has served the mental health needs of South Carolina citizens since 1821.  Its 6,000 employees and 8,000 volunteers offer services from 17 community mental health centers and six inpatient hospitals statewide.
