South Carolina Department of Mental Health

Independent Advocacy Organizations

A Mental Health Resource List for Use in South Carolina

This is a list of South Carolina based independent mental health organizations. While the South Carolina Department of Mental Health works closely with these organizations, they operate independently of the agency. These are community-based or grassroots organizations, some of which have state offices in Columbia and grassroots chapters and support groups operating throughout South Carolina.

The larger of these organizations have registered lobbyists on-staff who interact with members of the South Carolina State Legislature on issues pertaining to the needs and interests of people with mental illness.

One of these organizations is federally mandated (Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities, Inc.), while others are voluntary and/or membership organizations. Some of the affiliates of these organizations are run 100% by volunteers. None of these organizations require that you pay their membership fees, if they have them, to be able to receive their assistance or available educational materials.

If you think you need some help outside of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health's Client Advocacy Program or their Consumer Affairs Program or if you are receiving mental health services from the private sector and want to be of help to others, please call any of these organizations during routine, business hours.
