Rev. Summers was a mental health chaplain and supervisor of pastoral education in the South Carolina Department of Mental Health for 35 years prior to his retirement in 1999.  His book is an autobiographical integration of his personal journey with the forty years of vocational ministry and teaching in the clinical pastoral movement.  The volume describes not only the positive impact that his growing up years in lower South Carolina had on his professional life, but also sketched is the evolution of his interest in combining the elements of pastoral care with social justice. Perspectives are offered about an earlier era of gigantic state mental hospitals in the nation, the biological revolution in mental health treatment, and clinical pastoral care.  Rev. Summers shares how some critical times of suffering in his own life facilitated positively his personal and vocational development.
