OFFICE OF THE STATE COMMISSIONER OF MENTAL HEALTH DIRECTIVE NO. 526-80
(8-100)

TO:                 All Medical Staff

SUBJECT:     Notifying Patients' Families of Injuries

When a patient is injured seriously enough to result in scars or other disfigurement, lasting disability, or severe emotional trauma, the patient's family should be notified as soon as possible.  However, notification of families in instances of less serious injuries occurring after 10:00 p.m. may be delayed until the following morning.  The Officer of the Night shall use his best judgment in determining whether notification should be made immediately or delayed.  In those cases where notification is delayed until morning, the Officer of the Night who treated the patient should be the one to call the family.  If he is unable to reach the family, he should make sure that appropriate arrangements are made to have someone contact the family as soon as possible submitting a written report of these arrangements to the Superintendent or Director of Professional Services.
