"Summer Camp Uses Arts to Empower SC Youth" Kids in Lee County found themselves immersed in the Harlem Renaissance Era during the month of June. The four-week summer camp was the collaboration of the Auntie Karen Foundation, the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and the Lee County school system. About 400 kids participated and were able to take classes including sewing, cooking, guitar, African drums, Spanish and drama. DJJ’s Teen After-School Centers provide a structured, positive place to build academic and employability skills, and empower kids and teenagers for the future. |
"SCDJJ Providing Job Readiness Training to Teens" The SC Dept. of Juvenile Justice is taking a proactive stance when it comes to bettering the youth in South Carolina. It's employability training like this that helps teens focus on their futures and stay out of trouble. |
"SCDJJ Sizzle Reel" Team sports highlight an important role in the rehabilitation of youth at DJJ. Juveniles are taught teamwork, responsibility and discipline. Both DJJ's basketball coach (Raymond Harrison) and Physical Education coach (Robert Council) are former standout college athletes who know first-hand how sports can mold a young person. Many of DJJ's youth have immense athletic talent and dream of playing college, and even pro, sports. Dreams of taking the court or field under bright lights, surrounded by the roaring crowd, motivate many juveniles to change their lives. This "Sizzle Reel" offers a glimpse of some talented, disciplined athletes as they go through their rehabilitation at DJJ. |
