Attached is a listing of all the community service projects that will be provided by youth statewide on September 12, 2009. Specific contact information is also provided.
Preface: The General Assembly and Governor Mark Sanford has invested in DJJ staff/youth this past year; it is our goal to transform that investment into efforts that make South Carolina better thru service projects statewide.
Restoration: Repairing the harm and rebuilding relationships in the community is the primary goal of restorative juvenile justice. Restorative community service focuses on accountability, integration, skill building, and change. It provides offenders with the opportunity to fulfill their obligation to make amends for their crime by giving service of recognized value back to the community.

Examples of restorative projects are: DJJ-Victims’ Memorial Garden, DJJ- BARJ Adirondack Chair www.state.sc.us/djj/chair/ , Giving Victims a Voice partnership with Crime Stoppers, Operation Clean Bus partnership with schools, Habitat for Humanity, Home Works, painting murals on public buildings/bridges, food drive for a local food bank.

|
1) Together with four ISO’s 20 juveniles will volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. 2) Nine staff members including the mental health counselor and 20 juveniles will participate in a revitalization project at the former New Charleston Place Group Home. Future plans are for the facility to be used for juvenile and family services. 3) Partnering with the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church Youth Ministry, 4 volunteers and 20 juveniles will participate in a landscape clean up and home improvement activity for elderly members in the community surrounding the church. A basketball and cook-out is planned at the completion of their projects. |

1) 30 juveniles will participate in a donation drive for “I Care”. Packaged items will be sent to National Guard and Reserve soldiers on active duty along with a note from the juveniles in appreciation for their service. 2) The DJJ staff, juveniles and members of a local gardening club will work together to create an Honor Garden at the local National Guard Armory. |

The group will take residents a variety of personal items in gift bags decorated by the juveniles and also will provide entertainment. The gift items will be donated by Clanton Plains Baptist Church. Fisher Hill Community Baptist Church will help provide transportation for DJJ clients. |

1) In partnership with Carolina Kids to have a garden mentoring project. The harvest will be used as a fund raiser for children scholarships and various activities. Also, the food harvest will be given to local food banks and soup kitchens. $40,000 in grant money is anticipated for various projects. 2) The juveniles may partner with Habitat for Humanity building wall panels on the same day for later housing construction. 16 juveniles are scheduled to participate. |

|
Dillon County Council for the Aging will identify senior citizens in Dillon County, Lake View and Latta who have no local family support and in need of food, yard clean-up and no contact with people. Once identified DJJ kids will prepare/deliver food boxes and a variety of basic need items provided by Helping Hands of Dillon County. The juveniles will also design greeting cards for seniors and bake goods will be prepared by juveniles who attended a food preparation training camp. 15-20 Juveniles will collect can goods and other non-perishable items from July 11th to September 12th. The items will be delivered by juveniles to the Manna House Homeless Shelter. Once delivered, the juveniles will assist with sorting and organizing donated items. |

1) Plans are to restore a beautification area at an entrance to Saluda, including refurbishing a small water fall, planting vegetation and a general enhancement of the area. Also, beautification restoration to the Judicial Building. 3) Edgefield – refurbish a beautification area at town entrance. A wildlife habitat is also being planned with Carolina Fence. |
Charleston / Berkeley County juveniles will be participating in the Community Juvenile Arbitration and the Juvenile Pretrial Diversion Programs. The juveniles will provide service to their community by assisting in solving local crimes.
The group of 20-30 juveniles will walk neighborhoods handing out flyers with details of a crime that has harmed their community. The Ninth Circuit Solicitor's Office, Crime Stoppers of the Low country and the local police departments will be supervising the activity. This project is part of Crime Stoppers' "Giving Victim's a Voice".

Lancaster County Juvenile Arbitration will be working with Golden Care Adult Daycare Center. We will be involved with preparing and serving meals to the elderly as well as participating in their recreation time.
